Questions on Orthodontics
What is Orthodontics and why should I choose an Orthodontist?
Orthodontics is a special kind of dentistry involving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The technical term for crooked, crowded, or protruding teeth is "malocclusion" which means "bad bite". The practice of Orthodontics involves the design, application and control of corrective appliances, commonly called braces, to treat and control these problems. An Orthodontist is a Dentist who has advanced university training in a two to three year Orthodontic program at an accredited dental school. An Orthodontist is qualified to treat every type of Orthodontic problem.
Can treatments enhance self-esteem?
Orthodontics is one way to improve a person's looks and self-esteem, besides improving the health of the teeth. Orthodontic treatment gives a person a sense of control because it provides an opportunity to participate in improvement of his or her appearance. Increased self-confidence often is observed even before treatment is completed.
Why should all children be screened by age 7?
Catching Orthodontic problems early can save time and money later, and it''s usually easier on the kids! The earlier Orthodontic problems are detected and treated, the better the results. Children who are 4 to 7 years of age often have problems such as a narrow upper arch or palate, which creates a condition called crossbite. This means that the upper and lower back teeth fail to meet properly. Growth problems such as an underbite (large lower jaw) or jaw off to one side should be treated before the age of 8 or 9.
Why treat both Orthodontics and TMJ Dysfunction?
Dr. Brown believes that if a patient has TMJ Dysfunction, this condition must be treated before the patient has Orthodontic treatment. If the joints are not working in harmony, it will do little good to straighten the teeth. In fact, it will often do harm. Too much expense, time and effort go into Orthodontic treatment to have the results jeopardized by unstable jaw joints.
